CMMI - L 2 - Manage - Monitoring and Control
Wednesday, March 25, 2009
The purpose of Project Monitoring and Control is to provide adequate visibility into actual progress, so that team as well as management can take effective actions when the software project's performance deviates significantly from the software plans.
Software Project monitoring and control involves tracking and reviewing the software accomplishments and results against documented estimates, commitments, and plans, and adjusting these plans based on the actual accomplishments and results.
There are 2 goals in this process area.
Goal 1: Monitor Project against plan
Goal 2: Manage corrective action against closure
A documented Plan (Project Management Plan) is used for tracking. Some of the items that are tracked are:
- Effort (through TimeSheets)
- Size
- Schedule (Microsoft project or similar tools)
- Defects (RADAR)
- Risks
The data thus captured helps not only the project in tracking, but also the organization. The data is collated at organization level to see what is the average level of performance of projects. This happens at Level 4.
In general, Milestone reports and Metrics reports are prepared.
Apart from these, projects generally tracked throug weekly and/or monthly status reports.
